Abstract

Research findings among student groups in recent years indicate that learning varies among individuals as a result of personality type, perceptual and learning style. The purpose of this descriptive study was to profile the personality type and learning preferences of students of professional nursing. Findings indicate that a significant student profile exists among beginning students of professional nursing. This dominant profile includes a personality type characterised by sensing (72%), feeling (66%), judging (74%), and feminine behaviours ( P<0.0001). The preferred learning style of the prototype is haptic ( P<0.0001) and concrete in nature ( P<0.01). Based on findings from the study, the typical beginning student of nursing favours a learning environment characterised by a caring relationship, structure, permission to be assertive and utilise nurturing behaviours, use of practical material that relates to concrete realities and learning activities that require touch, muscular sensations, and kinesthetic senses.
