Abstract

We report on systematic study of structural and optical properties of Ce1-xGdxO2 (x = 0 to 0.2) nanoparticles (NPs). Solution combustion method was used for the synthesis of NPs. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirms single-phase cubic fluorite structure of all considered compositions. Lattice expansion also observed as Gd concentration is increased. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the porous and spongy nature of the NPs. Raman spectroscopy shows the presence of F2g Raman mode, confirming the fluorite cubic structure of the considered NPs. The peak shifting and asymmetric broadening behaviour of Raman peaks demonstrate the phonon confinement effect. Band-edge absorption peak show the blue shifts along with direct bandgap and change in the bandgap, observed as increases the Gd content.
