Abstract

This article investigates the applicability of stretch flanging models to predict the peak strain and the trimline for nonaxisymmetric flanges. Two models used were: (a) a closed form solution for the axisymmetric case and (b) a finite element method for the non-axisymmetric case. To verify the models, flanging experiments using 1008 AK steel were carried out. The peak strain (which governs the flange formability) and the final flange length (which determines the location of the trimline) were measured and compared to the corresponding model results. Based on this study, design graphs expressed in terms of the geometrical parameters are constructed. These graphs are intended to aid the part designer and the die designer to determine the flange formability and to determine the trimline location.
