Abstract

At this time, we have a healthy atmosphere of learning from and carrying out the resolution of the Sixth Plenum and strengthening the construction of a socialist spiritual civilization. In 1997, we shall face two major events—the resumption of the PRC's sovereign rights to administer Hong Kong's government, and the convening of the Party's Fifteenth Congress. In the face of such an advantageous background and general climate, how shall we strive to strengthen the ideological and political work in colleges and universities and bring it to a new plateau? In an interview with our reporters, Qu Zhenyuan, head of the Division of Ideological and Political Work of the State Education Commission (SEC), said that we must firmly grasp what looms as a great opportunity for the entire Party and all of society to strengthen the construction of a socialist spiritual civilization and conscientiously realize all the tasks of such a construction, to bestir our spirits and be aggressive in exploring possibilities and forging ahead, to enrich our lines of thought, to strive to do all our work well, and to achieve new development in the ideological and political work in colleges and universities, so as to bring about an altogether new vista.
