ru he design and constr ction of unttsT ual structures requires the solution of problems which may not be solved by applying existing design standards. A case in point are the skew joints encountered in the design of the Olympic Oval in Calgary. The design and construction of the Oval has been described in a paper by Lester and Armitage.' The intersecting precast roof arch girders were connected by cast-in-place joints with the interface skewed at about 45 degrees to the axis of the member (Fig. 1). By skewing the interface between the cast-in-place concrete joint and the precast girders, l rniwork was required only for the bottom of the joints and for closing the small gaps between the girder webs. In this context the question arose: can the concrete develop its full compression strength across such a skew joint? THEORETICAL ASPECTS AND CODE REQUIREMENTS
