Abstract

In this paper, we present the results of a numerical simulation that was executed within a needle -air- plane electrodes configuration to track the streamer discharge within air gap for different needle dimensions and different gap lengths. Also the effect of the electric field threshold and the drop voltage values were examined. The simulation results show the track of the path of the streamer plasma channels from the needle to the plane through the air. Also, the electric potential and field distributions were presented as contour plots. The plots show clearly the streamer initiation and growth and how the distributions were affected by the streamer growth between the two electrodes. The breakdown voltage was determined by varying the applied voltage values, and the minimum value that caused the streamer to bridge the air gap and touches the plane was indicated as the breakdown voltage. It was found that, the electric field threshold and drop voltage affect the breakdown voltage value greater than the needle dimensions.
