Abstract
Xanthium strumarium known for its pharmacological properties was defatted with petroleum ether and extracted with methanol, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride successively and partitioned between water and water saturated with n-butanol to isolate saponin. Isolated saponin showed significant inhibitory effect on germination, root and shoot lengths of weeds like Echinochloa colonum and Vicia saliva.
