Abstract

Vesicles obtained from native purple bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum have been studied by STM. STM images of the vesicles and separate polypeptides were obtained on the graphite substrate without metal shadowing. The ordered densely packed polypeptide structures consisting of more than 200 protein globules were observed. The separate clusters containing 7–15 protein globules in chain-type and hexagon packing with intermolecular distance of about 4 nm were found. The hexagonal structure of the observed clusters corresponds with model of purple bacteria photoreceptor unit and X-ray data. The I-V curves recorded from the vesicles are found to be asymmetric. The I-V curves measured from the ordered polypeptide structure display the conductance increase in comparance with the pure graphite surface and have a set of pecularities.
