Abstract

We report the first results on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a low loss (~3 dB/km) photonic crystal fiber. Because of the long coherence length in this fiber, efficient lasing is observed to accompany the onset of SBS. This lasing, in turn, seems to artificially lower the SBS threshold (~38mW). Finally, the acoustic velocity measured from the Brillouin shifts suggest a partial phononic bandgap guidance of the acoustic waves in PCF.
