This article focuses on linguistic forms of stigmatization of people with obesity. The study is based on a corpus of written posts and comments published on social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, X) and selected Polish websites (wyborcza.pl, money.pl, wp.pl, sportowefakty.wp.pl, kobieta.wp.pl, pudelek.pl, plotek.pl, gratka.pl, gazeta.pl, papilot.pl) between 2007 and 2025. An utterance is defined as a single post or a response authored by an internet user other than the original sender. Adopting a descriptive research perspective, the article aims at exploring the linguistic mechanisms of stigmatizing people with obesity in online communication and at reconstructing the prevailing portrayal of obese people emerging from the analysed texts. They are, among other things, referred to using the names of large and heavy animals, machines or containers, they are also dehumanised, patronised, and infantilised. Moreover, they are shown as lazy, weak, greedy, sloppy, unattractive and disgusting to others. The relevance of the research is underscored by the growing influence of Internet-mediated communication on the contemporary Polish.

The thesis paper is set against the premise of technological advancement in the past years where the internet based communication and its connected and corresponding effect it has on the English language and vocabulary. World known linguist David Crystal had once expressed his belief that the internet usage would be the trend which will have the greatest impact on the English language in the 21 st century. The daily use of the Internet and as of recently the massive use of social media platforms and easy to access technologies such as smart phones, have truly shaped the way we communicate, which contributes to the development of a whole new variety that defines culture as it is today. This study will therefore focus on the social media platforms, and will reveal the new words that have sprung as a result of the social media platforms use. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have attracted millions of English and non-English speaking users who connect and communicate on the platforms, using computers and smart phones and other mobile devices. This vast use of social media on daily basis has largely expanded and enriched the English vocabulary. This internet mediated communication provides a vast resourceful database for language researchers as well as English language learners. This thesis will focus on the Neologisms which had been created on social media platforms and used under the influence of the social media platforms, which in many ways affects the individual users of internet in terms of communication and vocabulary. This study would suggest that the most frequently occurring word formation processes of social media neologisms are: blending, compounding, semantic extension, acronyming and coinage. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to investigate the neologisms from social media platforms into the lexical system of Modern English and reveal the trends that are taking place within the processes of their formation and meaning. Following the analysis presented by authors such as Manuel Castells and James Slevin, this paper intends to contribute towards the debate on the use of Internet mediated communication (IMC). This paper argues that the relational structure being built through IMC is the network. A network of relations, of weaker or intimate ties occurring in environments more structured — virtual communities — or less structured — conversational spaces — in a permanent interaction between the online and offline spaces. The paper begins by outlining some contemporary debates about the use of IMC. It then presents data gathered through a national survey conducted in Portugal on Internet users in the ccTLD .pt.1 Next it argues that IMC seems to implement the creation of meeting places for socialization whose structure is the result of the social life dimensions more cherished by the users in a certain period of their lives—be it professional interests, entertainment or the search for relationships (friendship, conviviality, love) — and of their representations on the use of different kinds of IMC. In that way, forms of human association on the Internet are not jeopardizing those of the spaces not mediated by the Internet, since the communication does not confine itself to the Internet space, but it seems to be rather established beyond it.

The employment of dialogic principles in the websites and social media platforms of museums in China

This study conducted a content analysis to investigate the extent of museums’ online communication by utilizing their communication tools, such as websites and social media platforms, to fulfill their various activities and purposes. This study first applied dialogic principles to Chinese museums and examined national first-grade museums’ websites and social media platforms (e.g., Weibo and WeChat) to better understand online communication under China’s circumstances. The results showed that most museums did well in terms of convenience and information usefulness, but the item related to interactions was not ideal. More than four out of five museums had social media accounts, indicating that museums had transferred online communication from websites to social media platforms. In addition, the museum type or the number of visitors did not influence the employment of dialogic communication in museums. In the future, both museums and the public should strengthen dialogic communication to build a better dialogic environment for museums’ sustainable development.

The harnessing development of technology has drastically modified languages that people are using in all corners of the world. It is out of the question that world languages are constantly evolving to meet the needs and requirements of the society. Nowadays social media platforms have undoubtedly become an indispensable part of daily communication. Undeniably various platforms of social media attract millions of people with different ethnic, linguistic, racial and religious backgrounds to interact and take part in various discussions in blogs, microblogs, chat groups, discussion boards, forums, etc. Over the last 20 years Internet mediated communication has generated many grammatical structures and lexical items that need to be studied and redefined. With the advent of new technologies new linguistic deviations have emerged in social media platforms. It is no wonder that scientists are holding opposing thoughts and conflicting viewpoints of the same or similar phenomena. Being the most prevalent language of social media and having the highest frequency of usage on the Internet domain the English language has underwent large-scale changes and alternations. These non-standard forms are noted in all levels of language. Over the time linguistic deviations have the tendency to become standard forms. The latter may lead the English language to changes. The current article discusses the marked variations of English verbal system in contemporary English social media platforms.

The interface between pragmatics and internet-mediated communication

The aim of this chapter is to apply pragmatics to internet-mediated communication. On paper, two broad and apparently incompatible premises constitute the foundation of these distinct applications: (1) internet-mediated communication “makes no difference” for a pragmatic analysis (we do not have specific cognitive mechanisms to interpret online discourses that differ from the ones used offline); and (2) internet “makes all the difference” (the inferential gap-filling made by internet users, intended to turn online texts into valid interpretations, is influenced by the interfaces used for interactions and the range of contextual support that users can access in the interpretation of these online discourses). This chapter will review pragmatic analyses of internet-mediated communication with an emphasis on a cyberpragmatic framework (Yus 2011a).

Social media platforms are ubiquitous nowadays, and have connected us in ways. We share information and updates with different social media platforms used. Teaching and school-related works are high-stress professions where it’s very important to used social media apps in which it leads to a more productive and collaborative atmosphere hence it is also good everyone’s psyche. Today’s world social media plays a vital role in connecting everyone’s life, and relationship through online communication, postings, and reactions. A descriptive normative survey method was undergone in data gathering procedures such as observation, survey questionnaires, and interviews. This study focuses on the identification of the participant's age and gender demographic profile and common active social media platforms used by the faculty and non-teaching staff in participating group discussion or interaction, determination of the level of awareness on the use of emoticons, common social media terminologies on social media across demographic groups, social media ethical practices and its implications towards their social relations. The work category were 141 Faculty and 30 Non-teaching staff members who are commonly working at one campus and evaluated thru 5 point Likert Scale. Most of the work category belong to the generations which are familiar on the use of computers and android cellphones where social media is easily accessible; Facebook and Messengeris revealed to be the most familiar social media plat forms for postings and sharing of both pictures and movies purposely for collecting social reactions while Messenger was used as communication media both for private and group communications. However, communication barriers are established among faculty and non-teaching staff members on the use of social terminologies and emoticons across demographical groups but generally social media implications has positive effect on social relations.

The aim of this research was to reduce the dissimilarities in the literature regarding the use of social media platforms (SMPs) for training and its impact on students’ satisfaction and academic performance in higher education institutions. The main method of data collection for Communication Theory (CT) was a questionnaire survey. This research hypothesizes that CT applied to social media platforms for learning will affect online communication, motives to communicate, communication self-efficacy and attitude towards usethat in turn improve students’ satisfaction and students’ academic performance. The data collection questionnaire was conducted with 309 students familiar with social media platforms. Quantitative structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the results. A significant relationship was found between online communication, motives to communicate, communication self-efficacy and attitude towards usefeatures with TC for utilizing social media platforms for academic purposes that positively affected satisfaction and academic performance. Therefore, the study indicates that TC theory to use social media improve the collaborative learning of students and enable them to efficiently share knowledge, information, and discussions. We recommend that students utilize social media platforms in pursuit of their educational goals. Educators should also be persuaded to incorporate social media platforms into their classes at higher education institutions.

Screen time and adolescent well-being: a comparative study of Russia and Cuba

IntroductionThe increasing prevalence of devices with unrestricted internet connectivity among the younger population gives rise to a novel environment for social interaction and cognitive processing. Most research have concentrated on adolescents in the Western countries, addressing the influence of screen time on their social and cognitive growth. The objective of the study was to examine the association between the amount of time spent on screens and the presence of health and well-being problems among adolescents from Russia and Cuba. Considering the prevailing worldwide pattern of excessive internet usage and social media consumption, we expect to observe rare and minor variations in screen time and its effects on health and well-being.MethodsThe sample consists of 524 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 (M = 15.6; SD = 1.28), with 58.7% female. The study included 224 people residing in Cuba and 300 participants residing in Russia. The online survey comprises inquiries regarding internet and gadget usage duration, addiction to social media, positive and negative affects, and items for evaluating screen time induced problems, and preferred content.ResultsThere are significant differences in the amount of time spent on screens, addiction to social media, overall well-being, and health issues among adolescents from Russia and Cuba. Adolescents in Russia exhibited elevated levels of internet usage and engagement on social media platforms; however, they experienced an increase in cognitive and family-related issues. Cuban adolescents, in turn, experience more negative affect and problems with basic needs due to excessive Internet use.ConclusionGenerally, irrespective of their country of residence, teenagers who spend more time on screens tend to encounter a higher prevalence of health and well-being problems. The environment of Russian adolescents is significantly more like European countries in terms of Internet use, which has led to an increase in screen time and various health and psychological issues. In contrast, Cuban teenagers experience increased issues with family relationships because of screen time. The findings are consistent with prior research that have shown a correlation between increased internet usage and adverse outcomes.

The phenomenon of foreign loanword usage in online communication among Indonesian adolescents reflects linguistic dynamics shaped by globalization and the advancement of digital technology. As active users of social media, adolescents exhibit a tendency to adopt foreign vocabulary, both consciously and unconsciously as a means of expressing identity, lifestyle, and the influence of popular culture. This study aims to analyze the forms, functions, and sociolinguistic factors underlying the use of foreign loanwords in Indonesian adolescents' online communication. A descriptive qualitative method with a sociolinguistic approach was employed. Data were collected through netnographic observation on social media platforms, documentation of online communication screenshots, and semi-structured interviews with adolescent social media users. The findings reveal that words such as literally, cringe, vibes, and FYI are used not only as adaptations to global trends but also serve as markers of social group identity and linguistic style perceived as modern and inclusive. The study concludes that the use of foreign loanwords in online communication signifies a shift in language norms among adolescents, influenced by social, cultural, and technological factors. The implications of this study highlight the need for Indonesian language education in schools to accommodate such phenomena within the framework of digital literacy and the development of critical language awareness in the global era.

Experiences of internet users regarding cyberhate

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore internet users’ experiences of cyberhate in the aspects of ethnicity, religion, sexual preference and political perspective.Design/methodology/approachResearchers employed an exploratory survey method to examine internet users’ experiences of cyberhate. The participants of the study were determined by purposive sampling methods to attain maximum variety among internet users with high-level digital literacy skills. The data were collected from 355 internet users affiliated with two universities in Turkey and the USA using a personal data form and a survey (Cyberhate Experience Survey) of which reliability and validity indexes were ensured.FindingsThe results indicated that participants have observed and experienced cyberhate at different levels targeting their ethnic, religious, gender-based and political identities. The findings also pointed out that gender, income and socio-political identities are significant variables on exposure to cyberhate regardless of cultural and educational boundaries. The majority of survey respondents reported that they had encountered cyberhate mostly on social media platforms.Social implicationsThe findings of the study imply that to address the hate speech problem comprehensively, the author must enlighten people, change their way of thinking and broaden their perspectives by using measures such as intercultural dialogue, critical thinking, media literacy, education on tolerance and diversity.Originality/valueThis research was intended to contribute into the need to elaborate on various aspects of cyberhate, which is shared by academics, thinkers, journalists and educators. It may also serve to clarify how frequently internet users encounter hateful content and harassment online, which can have social consequences and influence young people’s trust to other people.
