Abstract

Helmholtz found that opposite-contrast stereograms may be seen as depthful: Treisman and other investigators could not achieve this result with different opposite-contrast stereograms. These conflicting results may be rationalized in terms of Whittle’s Hypothesis. A repetition of Treisman’s experiment, however, shows that it is possible to obtain stereopsis with her stereograms. This requires a revision of Whittle’s Hypothesis so that seemingly contradictory results may be incorporated in a theory of stereopsis.
