Abstract

Highly quantitative histological analysis was used to validate the technique of direct intra-ovarian biopsy in anaesthetised broodstock tilapia, Tilapia zillii (Gervais), as a simple and effective means of assessing ovarian maturity in vivo without unnecessary sacrifice. Stereology, a proven mathematical method for the highly quantitative analysis of histomorphometry, demonstrated that small pieces of ovarian tissue collected by intra-ovarian cannulation did not differ significantly ( P≥0.05) from the remaining ovary in terms of the relative proportion of any oocyte developmental stage.
