Abstract

Although the opportunities for women in sport in the USA have grown exponentially since Title IX became a law, there are areas of significant loss and persistent stalls in women’s advancement in sport as the papers in this issue further discuss. Our title, Stepping Through the Looking Glass, suggests that we need to go beyond conventional discussions of female athletes and uncover new directions for women in sport and physical activity in countries around the world. Only then can we discover the future for women’s sport. The papers in this special issue presented a variety of topics including nine papers that address gender issues in sport, microaggessions that take place in sport for women, the media’s role in reporting the status of sport for women and sexual identity in sport.
