The Archives of the University of Wroclaw have preserved folders with documents related to the studies, the defense of the doctorate and the employment at the University of Wroclaw of S. Parnicki-Pudełko. They show the unconventional character and unusual career path of the young scientist. By the way, through these documents we get to know him as a committed patriot and social activist. Already at that time, his significant intellectual potential was noted, his enthusiasm for work and his excellent development was rightly predicted. Living in extremely difficult times, he knew how to maintain decency. In the later years of his life and career, he was associated with the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and then the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan where he spread his wings as a professor and head of the Novae archaeological expedition.

Bishop Józef Sebastian Pelczar’s letters of 1886–1916 to Stanisław Tomkowicz from the collection of the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow In the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow there are rich collections of correspondence of famous people, including those connected with Przemyśl. In this paper the authors analyze 12 letters of Bishop Józef Sebastian Pelczar to Stanisław Tomkowicz of the years 1886–1916. They concern various matters: from religious art to the maintenance works in the Przemyśl Cathedral to political matters. They are a valuable testimony to the extensive interests of the Przemyśl Bishop.

Materials about the Dissolution of the Jesuit Order in 1773 and the Beginnings of the Commission of National Education Activity in the Academic Library of the Polish Academy Of Art and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Princes Czartoryski Library in Kraków The collection of the Academic Library of the Polish Academy of Art and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences contains five volumes of documents titled “Education Nationale” (book number 2220, vol. 1–5). One of the volumes is held by the Princes Czartoryski Library. The materials are neither organised in chronological order nor by theme. Some threads related to the dissolution of the Jesuit Order as well as the establishment and activity of the Commission of National Education and the Polish-Lithuanian Commission for Distribution, responsible for distributing assets of the Jesuit Order for educational purposes under the Commission of National Education supervision, can be separated. What is worth to pay attention to are the letters of ex-Jesuits to king Stanisław August Poniatowski as well as other pieces of correspondence, a variety of draft laws, practical issues on goods and financial matters, minutes on meetings of different assemblies, or attempts to establish a position on numerous current issues. Eight handwritten maps showing distribution of schools supervised by the Commission of National Education within departments, as well as numerous universals and decrees are also worth noting.

Activity of Father Władysław Chotkowski (1843–1926) in the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences

Władysław Chotkowski (1843–1926), a Catholic priest and patriotic activist, lectured on Church history at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The excellent preacher who addressed national and social issues from the pulpit, he delivered eulogies at the funerals of eminent Poles and notable Kraków figures. The article presents the relationship of Władysław Chotkowski with the Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1883, he was elected a member of the Historical Commission, and in 1901 appointed to the Commission for the History of Polish Literature. Since 1907, he was a corresponding member of the Faculty of History and Philosophy at the Academy of Arts and Sciences. As a researcher of the Church history in Galicia, he participated in the meetings of the faculty, during which he presented the results of his research and scientific work that were published by the Academy of Arts and Sciences as dissertations and monographic works. The text, based on archival materials from the resources of the Archive of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), fills the knowledge gap in the research on the scientific activity of prelate Władysław Chotkowski in the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Based on the case study of the Archive of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) in Cracow, hereinafter referred to as the PAN and PAU Archive of Science, the paper deals with an archive as a place of remembrance about scholars and remembrance management. The article discusses the concept of remembrance in culture and the humanities as well as the concept of a remembrance site in the context of archival studies. The PAN and PAU Archive of Science is presented as a place of remembrance about the people of science and culture on the Cracow’s archival and cultural map. In addition, the paper touches upon the subject of scholar’s legacy as a means of cherishing their memory based on selected examples from the Archive of Science. The final section presents various forms of activities performed by archivists who manage the memory of the people of science and culture, using the employees of the Archive of Science as an example.

It was organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Department of Ethnology; the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences; the Polish Academy of Sciences, Committee on Ethnological Sciences, the Committee for Urban Anthropology and the Polish Society of Urban Ethnology. This time, a seemingly light topic was chosen by the organizers: Summer in the City.

The paper was written on the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of Professor Zuzanna Topolinska’s birthday. The author presents the curriculum vitae of the scholar and her outstanding achievements in the Slavonic linguistics.Zuzanna Topolinska (born 1931, in Warsaw) graduated in Philology (with a specialization in linguistics) in 1952 at the University of Łodź. In 1959 she obtained her PhD degree at Warsaw University and in 1964 she was awarded the title of habilitated doctor. In 1974 she became an associate professor and in 1980 a full professor at the Institute of Polish Language at the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the years 1954–1992, she successively worked in the dialectological, grammatical, and semantic centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1983 Professor Topolinska moved to Macedonia and worked as a visiting professor at the Department of Slavic Studies at the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” in Skopje. She was one of the organizers of the Research Center for Areal Linguistics (ICAL) at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. She was in charge of the center since its foundation in 2000 until 2016. In ICAL she was the head of the scientific project “The place of the Macedonian language in the Slavic and Balcan linguistic world”. Professor Topolinska is the author of over 600 publications which include more than 20 books. She is Doctor Honoris Causa of the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University (1997) and the University of Wroclaw (2016). In 2016 at the University of Warsaw her doctorate was officially restored after 57 years. She is a member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1976), the Polish Academy of Sciences and Arts (1991) and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1997).

Remembrance of "Oxford" conferences past.

The seeds of what subsequently flowered into the triennial “Oxford Conferences” on modelling and the control of breathing were sown at the conference dinner of a scientific meeting at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw in 1971 at which Dan Cunningham, a respiratory physiologist at the University of Oxford and Richard Herczynski a mathematician and fluid dynamicist at the Polish Academy of Sciences, happened to be seated beside each other. As recounted by Cunningham in the interview that he gave to the Physiological Society (of the United Kingdom) in 1994 as part of its Oral History project: “My parper at the Warsaw meeting was ahout the pattern of breathing … I was trying to express the thing quantitatively and he drew it all out on a paper table napkin for me … we thought at that time,supposing people like him and people like myself got together and talked this kind of thing out in public at a meeting, it might be to the benefit of both sides”

The new Botanical Garden of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in 1974 as an institution dedicated to collecting, conserving, and evaluating crop genetic resources and their wild progenitors. The main object of this research is rye (Secale L. spp.) — the cereal of great importance to Poland. The genetic resources of rye are preserved in living field collections, as well as in a seed stock bank. The living collection contains 1.193 taxa, including 12 species ofSecale and 788 different rye cultivars. The seed bank stores 773 taxa of rye kept in glass containers (in vacuum, neutral gases or with silica gel) with optimum low moisture content in the seeds. Biochemical, physiological and genetical investigations are carried out for the estimation of safe and suitable conditions of seed dehydration and long term storage. These genetic resources of rye serve as material for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, as well as for the evaluation of their selected breeding properties, especially seed protein content and its nutritional value. The taxonomic studies are performed using the isoenzyme technique and numerical methods. The enzymatic variation within the rye species, cultivars and inbred lines, are analysed. For the protein resources evaluation, different techniques are applied: the histochemical staining of seed slices. scanning electron microscope observations, and the chemical analyses of the entire amino acid composition of seed proteins. These results are used to select the most valuable taxa, which are then proposed to be used in the rye breeding programme.
