Abstract

Pittsburgh’s new ice hockey arena, the Consol Energy Center, is the first in the National Hockey League to achieve gold certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The formidable site and engineering challenges its designers faced ranged from a drastically sloping site and pronounced variations in geological characteristics to a 100 ft tall atrium space, a 400 ft long S-shaped curtain wall, and soaring and elegant roof trusses. The result is a stunning 720,000 sq ft venue for the Steel City that is not only modern but every bit as sharp as the blades that cut across its signature ice sheet.
