Abstract

Traditional oscillator steady state simulation and noise analysis methods are only applicable to stand-alone oscillators without large signal inputs. In this paper, we present a multi-tone harmonic balance simulation method for driven oscillators with one or more periodic inputs. More importantly, we extend the Perturbation Projection Vector (PPV) theory to driven oscillators, and derive numerical method for calculating the PPV waveforms from the multi-tone harmonic balance solution. We evaluate the proposed technique on a driven LC oscillator, the simulation results show that our method is able to accurately capture the steady state and phase noise of driven oscillators.
