Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the ongoing R&D work in Italy in the field of energy applications of High Tc superconductors. Although the description is quite schematic it should allow to have a general view of the Italian state of art in this strategic field. R&D is carried out by companies, universities and research institutes in the frame of national and international programmes or cooperative agreements. A substantial part of the national activity is supported by MURST (Italian Ministry for University and for Scientific and Technological Research) which promotes and funds a large project, aimed at the development of innovative material preparation processes and devices. A few organizations also run their own programs, focused on power applications, sustained either with internal funds or the support of ENEL SpA, the major electric utility in Italy.
