Abstract

Motor-driven vibrators combine simple harmonic motions in such a way as to show the complete family of Lissajous' curves on the screen. Addition of a third motion renders three dimensional harmonic figures visible as skew curves in space. These figures exhibit multiple phase changes. Mathematical properties are mentioned. Behavior characteristics of synchronous motors are demonstrated by means of the skew curves. The possibility of a simple, direct laboratory measurement of power factor is indicated.
