Abstract

With its rapid economic development, China has become the largest construction market in the world. This has come along with serious issues regarding resource availability and environmental protection, which have to be solved to enable further development. Promoting sustainable buildings has become a common goal both for the government and the public. Research on a green building labelling system was launched in Mainland China in the late 1990s, and by the end of 2012, a total of 742 projects had obtained a green building label, for a total gross floor area of 75,810,000 m2. This article provides an overview of the development of green building labelling in China, including the history and current status of the Chinese green building evaluation standard, labelling system and policies. Additionally, two label-holder public buildings with low-cost and climate-adapted technologies are introduced.
