Abstract

The sky above -- eternal and serene, yet intricate and mysterious -- has piqued human curiosity for at least as long as records survive. This book documents the evolution of humanity's understanding of the cosmos, drawing on some of the most rare and beautiful books in the history of astronomy. Many of these books come from the collections of the Huntington Library in Southern California, supplemented with illuminated manuscripts from the J Paul Getty Museum and contemporary snapshots from space supplied by NASA. More than 150 colour images illustrate this volume, which is sure to delight astronomers and bibliophiles alike and fascinate all curious readers.
