Abstract

Lithium metal has been considered as a promising anode for next generation rechargeable batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and low reaction voltage. However, commercial using of lithium metal anode is limited by non-uniform dendric lithium growth and low Coulombic efficiency. Despite considerable efforts have been devoted to practical use of lithium metal, there are still many challenges related to dendritic lithium growth. Herein, we synthesized a new functional electrolyte additive and applied to lithium metal battery system. This additive achieves a high Coulombic efficiency during long-term cycling, resulting in an enhanced cycle retention in NCM/Li cell as well as Li/Li symmetric cell. Our cryo-TEM, FE-SEM and XPS studies reveal that the surface film derived from this additive can serve as a favorable SEI for stable lithium deposition, providing good insight for the development of electrolyte additive for lithium metal batteries.
