Abstract

In the hydrodynamic model, a new eigenequation of the slab η i mode near the minimum- q magnetic surface in a tokamak plasma with negative magnetic shear is analytically derived by considering the magnetic shear as a function of the magnetic surface. Solving the eigenvalue problem numerically shows that the variation of the shear with the magnetic surface near the minimum- q surface can produce potential wells and give rise to unstable sheared slab η i modes. The strength of the instabilities tends to be weaker when the safety factor q profile becomes flat at two sides of the minimum- q surface. In addition, the asymmetrical q profile at the two sides may lead to a coupling mechanism of the radial modes.
