Abstract

By studying the eigenmode solutions and by calculating the evolution of an initial wavelet, it is shown that Alfvén waves in a magnetized plasma are stable even if the plasma possesses a longitudinal flow velocity v0 with a strong shear, provided the maximum flow velocity is less than twice the Alfvén speed. This result is discussed in the light of recent neutral beam injection experiments in tokamaks.
