Abstract

The articulated terrain of the Alpine republic of Austria and its complex geological and tectonic situation are significant factors predetermining the tendency of the territory for slope deformations. With construction activities, a third factor comes into play – evaluation of fitness of the territory for construction and taking into account the conditions of the locality when designing the building construction or other engineering works. In 2013, our company was invited to contribute with solving the issue of slope deformations at a new residential complex construction site, consisting of stability problems that occurred during construction works in a very steep terrain and demanding geotechnical conditions of foundations. Engineering-geological and in particular hydrogeological conditions were underestimated. Draining using the siphon drains to increase the slope stability was considered. Also other amelioration measures were implemented. The article at first briefly introduces the method of siphon drains. The main part is devoted to model locality and description of the drainage.
