Abstract

With the assistance of the U. S. Office of Education Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program, the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature of the University of Washington offered a nine-month program for the improvement of the four major areas in which even experienced teachers are often deficient: 1) active command of the language in academic subjects; 2) application of linguistic theory to classroom teaching; 3) application of modern teaching methods to language instruction, particularly to the presentation of German culture, civilization and literature; and 4) knowledge of the history, literature and present picture of German culture. At the same time, the program aimed at investigating possibilities for improving the prospective teachers training program on the university level. Twenty-five experienced teachers from throughout the United States participated in the program. They were chosen with the help and cooperation of the superintendents of public school districts and foreign language supervisors. Participants had to meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Washington. This was necessary because the entire study program was also to serve as a model for a new M.A. program for teachers of German. The thirty-six credit hours to be granted were divided into the following areas: language skills--9; methods of teaching foreign languages-9; linguistics--9; culture, civilization and literature--9. In order to make this program more complete and to overcome some of the existing weaknesses in the more traditional graduate programs for German teachers, plans called for conducting the fall and winter quarters on campus and shifting the spring quarter to Germany with a carefully designed program of classroom instruction, field trips and independent projects there. By doing this, the Department also hoped to develop some workable pattern for the undergraduate program in the training of teachers of German.
