Abstract
Trachoma is a painful eye condition that is caused by Chlamydia Trachomatis. If left untreated, repeated infections cause the eyelid to turn inwards. This condition is known as trachomatous trichiasis, or blinding trachoma, and results in intense pain and scarring on the front of the eye that ultimately leads to blindness. To address the huge burden of trachoma in Ethiopia, CBM has collaborated with the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara to implement the Amhara Trachoma Control Program (ATCP) since 2006. In this article, Degu Hassen provides a personal account of his experiences as a trachoma patient and describes how attending a community awareness session led to his decision to undergo surgery.
