Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the healthy lifestyle behaviors of college students enrolled in the sports sciences faculty at a state university in Istanbul based on their departments, grades, and genders. The sample of the research was constituted by totally 503 voluntarily students including 160 females and 343 males who were selected by random method (i.e., freshmen to seniors) from physical education and sports, coaching education and sports management departments. Data collected by using Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale and were analyzed according to the variables of department, class and gender. Cronbach Alpha of the scale was calculated as 0,937. Data were analyzed using Manova, Anova, t test, and post hoc LSD tests. A statistically significant difference was found between male and female students in terms of exercise and stress management [Wilks Lambda (λ) 0,938; F (6,496)=5,423; p<0.05]. A statistically significant difference was determined between groups for self-actualization, as teacher education and sports department students generated greater value compared to sport management and coaching education departments [Wilks Lambda (λ) 0,940; F (6,495)=2,579; p< 0.05]. Freshmen had higher scores in health responsibility sub-scale comparison to sophomores, juniors and seniors [Wilks Lambda (λ) 0,931, F (6,494)=1,992; p < 0.05]. As a conclusion, male students demonstrated higher healthy lifestyle behaviors than females in terms of exercise and stress management while students from teacher education department had higher scores in comparison to students from sport management and coaching education departments in self-actualization sub-scale. Freshmen had lower health responsibility scores comparison to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. It was concluded that the factors of department, grade and gender might have an effect on the healthy lifestyle behaviors of students enrolled in sports sciences faculty
