Abstract
This chapter focuses on the drug spironolactone. Spironolactone is a white or yellowish white crystalline powder that has a slight characteristic odor. The synthesis and subsequent widespread therapeutic use of spironolactone has been a logical consequence of the discovery of the most potent mineralocoticoid hormone in man, aldosterone. The chapter discusses the drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics of spironolactone and describes its physical properties such as ionization constants, solubility characteristics, and partition coefficient. The chapter presents various method of analysis of this drug such as compendial tests, electrochemical analysis, spectroscopic analysis, and chromatographic methods of analysis. The chapter concludes with a discussion on its biological properties such as activity, toxicity, and safety.
