Abstract

A major difference between New Orleans black Spiritual churches and those elsewhere in the United States is the nature ofspirit possession. In New Orleans, this involves spirit guides who are symbols of protest and empowerment for the largely low-income and working-class female membership. Founder Leafy Anderson'sguides include FatherJohn, Queen Esther, and most important Black Hawk, who through association with St. Michael and Martin Luther King is the group's master symbol.
