Abstract
By a direct observation of the electron density in a flowing afterglow, the spin dependence of the process He(2 3S 1) + He(1 1S 1) → He(1 1S 0) + He + + e has been demonstrated. When the metastable He atoms are optically oriented, the process violates spin conservation, and a decrease of 5% in the electron density is observed.
