Medical ozone administration is also associated with serious adverse effects, including gas embolus and fatality. We present the case of a patient who experienced dermatologic complications after receiving medical ozone therapy. The complications were managed with surgical intervention and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Case Report: A 43-year-old female was administered medical ozone therapy injections to the temples and central forehead by a dermatologist to enhance hair growth and collagen formation. After the procedure, the patient experienced worsening alopecia and scarring in the treated areas. She eventually underwent surgical excision and closure that was performed by a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Intraoperatively, she was noted to have significantly fibrotic, scarred, and poorly vascularized tissue, which raised concern for poor wound healing. Her plastic surgeon referred her for adjunctive hyperbaric medicine evaluation to treat presumed skin flap vascular compromise. She completed a course of forty hyperbaric oxygen treatments before returning to the plastic surgeon for scar tissue excision and local tissue rearrangement that ultimately resulted in acceptable cosmesis. Conclusion: While medical ozone therapy may result in favorable effects on a cellular level, the treatment is associated with significant clinical risks that may outweigh its potential therapeutic benefits. Systemic hyperbaric oxygenation may enhance vascularity and improve the quality of devitalized tissue in areas previously treated with medical ozone therapy. Context: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) induce oxidative stress, highlighting the need for bio-oxidative alternatives. Aims: To evaluate the effects of two consecutive cycles of medical ozone therapy in HIV-seropositive patients and compare the results of both cycles using clinical indicators and redox biomarkers. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted following a research protocol, including 25 HIV-seropositive patients undergoing ART, who received medical ozone therapy via rectal insufflation (volumes of 150–300 mL in a stepwise manner) in 12 sessions over one month, with two cycles spaced three months apart. The initial and final evaluation included hematological and biochemical laboratory tests, absolute T-CD4+ lymphocyte count, viral load, and seven plasma redox balance indicators. Final variable values were compared with baseline values and a supposedly healthy individual group (SHIG). Adverse reactions were recorded. Results: ART showed beneficial effects in 78% of cases, with no significant differences in hematological and biochemical variables (p>0.05) between the treated group at the beginning and end of the study. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the mean values of malondialdehyde concentration, reduced glutathione, hydroperoxides, advanced oxidation protein products, and peroxidation potential at the end of the study compared to baseline values and SHIG. Conclusions: The beneficial effects of two cycles of medical ozone therapy combined with ART demonstrated a 74% simultaneous modification in reducing oxidation of proteins and lipids and an increase in cellular immune indicators in the studied patients. No hematological or blood toxicity, adverse events, or drug interactions were observed.

Medical ozone therapy has been increasingly explored as a potential adjunctive intervention across a range of clinical conditions. This narrative review aims to provide a critical overview of the biological mechanisms, biochemical interactions, and clinical applications of ozone therapy, with particular emphasis on the translational gap between experimental findings and clinical evidence. Ozone exerts its biological effects primarily through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid ozonation products (LOPs), which act as secondary messengers influencing redox balance, immune responses, inflammation, and cellular metabolism. These mechanisms have been extensively characterized in vitro and in preclinical studies. However, their direct translation into clinically meaningful outcomes remains uncertain. Available clinical data suggest potential benefits of ozone therapy in selected contexts, including wound healing, musculoskeletal disorders, and infection control. Nevertheless, the majority of studies are small, heterogeneous, and often lack rigorous methodological design. High-quality randomized controlled trials are limited, and the overall level of evidence remains low to moderate depending on the indication. Recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses further emphasize the heterogeneity and methodological limitations of the available literature. Importantly, ozone therapy remains controversial within evidence-based medicine, with variability in regulatory acceptance across countries and limited endorsement from major health authorities. Safety data are also constrained by a lack of long-term studies and standardized treatment protocols. In conclusion, while ozone therapy demonstrates biologically plausible mechanisms and promising experimental effects, its clinical efficacy has not been conclusively established. At present, ozone therapy should be regarded as an investigational and adjunctive approach rather than a validated therapeutic modality, and further well-designed clinical trials are required to define its role in clinical practice.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of ozone therapy on ovarian reserve, number of ovarian follicles, ovarian morphology in a rat ischaemia reperfusion (IR) injury model. Twenty-four, Wistar Hannover rats were included. The rats were divided into three groups as control, detorsion-only, and ozone therapy + detorsion groups. There was a statistically significant difference in the follicular damage and inflammation scores between the study groups (p = .019, p = .002, respectively). The highest AMH decrease was observed in the detorsion-only group (p = .012). The total damage score was higher in the detorsion-only group than the ozone therapy + detorsion group. Preantral, small and large antral follicle numbers were less in the detorsion-only group than the ozone therapy + detorsion group. The highest postoperative day 7 TAS level was in the ozone therapy + detorsion group. TOS levels did not differ significantly between the study groups. The combination of the ozone therapy with ovarian detorsion is more effective in protecting the ovarian reserve than ovarian detorsion-only. Impact Statement What is already known on this subject? Adnexal torsion is a common gynecological emergency in reproductive-age women. The recommended management is the detorsion of the adnexal pedicle in patients with fertility desire. What do the results of this study add? The combination of the medical ozone therapy with conventional surgical ovarian detorsion is more effective in the protection of the ovarian reserve compared to surgical ovarian detorsion. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This study speculates that medical ozone therapy in addition to conventional surgical ovarian detorsion could preserve ovarian reserve and function if confirmed in further clinical studies.

Background: Multiple drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a growing public health threat. Oxidative stress is reckoned as one of the rate-limiting steps in the progression of TB. Oxidative stress increases the level of tissue injury and organ damage. The use of medical ozone therapy is gaining popularity due to its anti-microbial property and its homeostatic potential. Objectives: The present study investigates the role of ozone therapy in boosting the antioxidant status of MDR-TB patients. Methods: Medical Ozone therapy was given through rectal insufflations for 21 days in seven MDR-TB patients (five males and two females) who were under anti-Koch Treatment-4 were enrolled after obtaining written consent. The sessions were spaced out at a rate of three sessions per week. Blood serum and plasma samples were collected from the patients at the baseline and at the end of the 21st session to assess the antioxidant status of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GR) and other biochemical parameters. Results: Statistically significant rise was observed in SOD (P = 0.028), but not in GR (P = 0.058). No other biochemical profiles showed any statistically significant change except for a reduction in serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (P = 0.026). Participants also expressed subjective improvement in their mental status. However, we have not used any validated scales to record their mental status. Conclusions: The present study suggests that ozone can be a promising medium in tackling the oxidative stress and enhancing the positive mental attitude in ailing MDR-TB patients. Therefore, it can be considered as adjuvant therapy in treating MDR-TB. However, there are major limitations like smaller sample size and lack of control group. Large scale randomized trials are warranted.

To study the effect of medical ozone in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. 42 patients with chronic hepatitis B were divided randomly into two groups. 22 patients treated with basic therapy were as a control group. 20 patients treated with basic therapy plus ozone therapy were taken as a treatment group. Index of biochemistry and virology were studied at initial and post-treatment 8 weeks. After the treatment, liver function of the treatment group and the control group had more significant improvement. The treatment group complete effective and partial effective were 10% and 35% difference. The control group complete effective and partial effective were 4.6% and 13.6% (P < 0.05). Treatment of medical ozone on patients with chronic hepatitis B is effective.

Our aims were to evaluate the efficacy of ozone therapy (OT) in an experimental rat model of acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) and to compare its effects with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in this entity. Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into sham-operated, ANP, ANP + HBO, and ANP + OT groups. Acute necrotizing pancreatitis was induced by infusing 1-mL/kg 3% sodium taurocholate into the common biliopancreatic duct. Hyperbaric oxygen was administered twice daily at a 2.8-atm pressure for 90 minutes. Ozone therapy was set as daily intraperitoneal injections of 0.7-mg/kg ozone/oxygen gas mixture. Hyperbaric oxygen and OT were continued for 3 days after the induction of ANP. The surviving animals were killed at the fourth day, and their pancreases were harvested for biochemical, microbiological, and histopathologic analyses. Serum amylase/lipase and neopterin levels and tissue oxidative stress parameters were similar to sham's values in both the ANP + HBO and the ANP + OT groups. Histopathologic injury scores were significantly lower in the treatments groups than in the ANP group. When compared with the ANP group, the number of infected rats was significantly lesser in the ANP + HBO and the ANP + OT groups. Hyperbaric oxygen and OT reduce the severity and the mortality in the experimental rat model of ANP, and a greater benefit was received for OT comparing with HBO.

Background. Complications following artificial abortion can lead to reproductive dysfunction and gynecological diseases, endocrine disorders, infertility, and miscarriage. One of the most important tasks of practical healthcare is the introduction of safer abortions and an adequate rehabilitation system, including early, as well as ultrasound, diagnostics of emerging complications, into the practice of obstetricians and gynecologists. Materials and methods. The study included 124 female patients (average age, 34.8+1.7 years) who applied for pregnancy termination in the first trimester. The women were divided into three groups. Group 1 included 52 (42.0%) female patients who received magnetic-infrared-light-laser and ozone therapy to prevent complications following a medical abortion in a complex of therapeutic measures with antibacterial drugs. Group 2 included 24 (19.3%) patients who had dysbiosis, allergic reactions, and drug disease and who used magnetic-infrared-light-laser and ozone therapy without antibiotics to prevent postabortion complications. The control subgroup comprised 48 (38.7%) patients who did not receive treatment for the prevention of complications. Results. A more rapid change in the size of the uterus toward normalization was noted in women in groups 1 and 2 who received preventive measures. In addition, 1 (2.0%) patient in group 1, 1 (4.1%) in group 2, and 3 (6.2%) in the control group had an exacerbation of bilateral chronic salpingo-oophoritis. Conclusions. The use of modern technologies (magnetic-infrared-light-laser and medical ozone therapy) with and without antibacterial therapy as preventive measures has a positive effect on uterine contractility and reduces the risk of inflammatory complications in the first months following artificial termination of pregnancy. Ultrasonography of the pelvic organs and laser biophotometer can be used as diagnostic tests and can assess the development of complications following a medical abortion.

Purpose: Previous studies have shown that hiperbaric oxygen (HBO) is effective in reducing severity of acute distal colitis (ADC). On the other hand, ozone therapy (OT) is shown to reduce inflammation in several pathological entities. Thus, we designed a study to evaluate the efficacy of OT in an experimental rat model of ADC and to compare effects of both HBO and OT in this entity. Methods: Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: sham, ADC, ADC+HBO, ADC+OT groups. All groups except sham group were subjected to ADC procedure, which was induced by intracolonic installation of %4 acetic acid to investigate acute phase of inflamation. ADC+HBO group underwent to hyperbaric oxygen chamber at 2.8 atmosphere absolute pressure with 100 % O2 inhalation for 90 minutes twice in a day and ADC+OT group received 0.7 mg/kg/day ozone/oxygen mixture intraperitoneally for a total of 4 days after induction of colitis. The surviving animals were killed at the 5th day and their distal colons were harvested for biochemical and histopathologic analysis. Results: The Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the ADC group were significantly higher when comparing with the other groups indicating increased damage in tissue with colitis (p<0.05, ADC vs. the other groups). Althougt the MDA levels were decreased in the ADC+HBO and the ADC+OT groups, only that of ADC+OT group was statistically significant (p<0.005, ADC+OT vs. AP). The tissue Superoxydedismutase (SOD) activity in ADC group were significantly lower than the sham-operated group (p<0.05, ADC vs. sham-operated). There is no significantly difference for the tissue SOD activities between the treatment groups and the sham-operated group. The difference between all groups in terms of the values of the Gluthatione dismutase (GSH-Px) activity were not statistically significant. At the histopathological evaluation, there is a significant improvement in the ADC+OT group. Conclusion: Our data showed that OT reduced severity in the experimental ADC compared with HBO in term of oxidative stress, histopathologic damage score. These findings suggest that it is possible to improve the outcome of ADC by using ozone therapy as an adjuvant therapy.FigureTable: [1215] Histopathological score of the each group

The excess in the production of free radicals produces an imbalance between the prooxidants and antioxidants in favor of the former; which causes loss of redox control signaling and damage to biomolecules such as proteins, lipids and deoxyribonucleic acid. When homeostasis is altered in the redox metabolism of cells that participate in the immune response, they usually evolve into a situation of oxidative stress that facilitates cell dysfunction and death. The objective of our work was to study the effect of ozone on the regulation of redox status, necessary to maintain normal immune function in patients with immunoglobulin A deficiency. Patients and methods: The Research Ethics Committee conducted and approved a clinical trial and whose patients gave informed consent for inclusion. Sixty patients were randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving ozone rectal insufflation (study group-SG) and the second using Hebertrans® (control-GC group), subcutaneously. Pro-oxidant parameters (malondialdehyde-MDA and advanced oxidation protein products-AOPP) and antioxidant parameters (superoxide dismutase1-SOD1, catalase-CAT, glutathione peroxidase-GPx and total antioxidant capacity of serum) were measured. They were measured at the beginning and one month after treatment. Results: In the SG the MDA and the APOP of patients ?15 years, decreased significantly (p = 0.000) with respect to the control group. SOD1 in the SG increased in patients ?15 years (p = 0.006) and from 16 to 30 years of age (p = 0.040) with respect to GC. CAT in patients ?15 years of the SG increased significantly (p=0.001) with respect to initial values. The final result of the total antioxidant capacity in the SG was significantly (p=0.000) higher in patients ? 15 years, similar results were obtained in GPx (p=0.013). Conclusions: With ozone therapy, beneficial effects on the oxidation reduction balance were achieved. Medical ozone therapy may be an additional treatment option, for immunoglobulin A deficient patients with oxidative stress.

Objective: Burn injury is a type of injury which is the disruptin of skin and organs by the effects of heat, electrical current, chemical caustic or burning agents. The purposes of daily burn care are removing of necrotic tissue, prevention of bacterial contamination, control of travma, stimulation of epithelization and protection of systemic complications. In this study, the effects of hyperbaric oxygen and ozone therapy were investigated, and used as adjuvant therapy in burn management, on burned areas utilizing experimental burn model. Material and Methods: In this study, 28 Wistar albino rats weighing 200-220 gr were used and divided into four groups. 10% burn defect areas were occured in all experiments. In the first group, rats were treated with hyperbaric oxygen. Medical ozone therapy was applied to the second group. In the third group, only debridement was used as treatment. Any treatment options were not used to rats in the fourth group. Results: The analysis revealed no statistically significant difference of burns surface areas between Groups 1 and 2, while a significant reduction were noted in Groups 1 and 2 when compared to the other groups. On histopathologic examination of the Groups 1 and 2 we observed a significant decrease in the inflammation and fibrosis rates when compared with other groups. Conclusion: As a result, we observed the affirmative effects of hyperbaric oxygen and ozone therapy on burn management. We suggest that these treatment modalities can be added to standart treatment options as adjuvant therapy. We also think that large researches are needed to support this issue.

The development of the reactor for a lower concentration of ozone need to be done. The tipe of reactor can be used for the application of medical ozone therapy. Medical ozone therapy can be produced by using double DBD plasma reactor with oxygen as source and variation of voltage. The influence of flowrate to ozone capacity was investigated using double DBD plasma reactor with cylinder-cylinder configuration. The high AC voltage was applied in the range of 0-2000 Volts and the frequency of 50 Hz. The pure oxygen inserted into the reactor with several variations in flow rate, i.e. 2 to 10 L/min. The results showed that the ozone concentration decreased with increasing gas flow rate. I-V characteristic shows that reactor has two regime current as function of voltage. This characteristic is difference with single dielectric DBD Plasma reactor. The suitable dose of ozone therapy for medical other than useful in numerous pathological conditions could be a powerful therapeutic resource to prevent the damages of aging and to improve many functions in human bodies without deleterious effects.
