Abstract

The luminescence of Eu 3+ in two monazite-type orthophosphates: La 0.98Eu 0.02PO 4 and EuPO 4 is investigated by site-selective time-resolved spectroscopy. Informations on the nature of perturbed sites in the doped phosphate and on the localization of the europiums on normal lanthanum sites or on perturbed sites are discussed considering the crystal field parameters and the analysis of the site-to-site energy transfers. Vibronic satellites are observed in both the doped and the neat compounds and assigned to the coupling between the 5 D 0 → 7 F 0,1,2 transitions and the localized vibration modes of the (PO 4) 3− groups.
