Abstract

Summary A taxonomic comparison was made between Methanobacterium strain Ivanov and Methanobacterium bryantii type strain M.O.H.. Methanobacterium strain Ivanov differed significantly from M. bryantii type strain M.O.H. in cell size, temperature optima, doubling time, plating efficiency, DNA guanine plus cytosine content and nitrogen and sulfur nutrition. In addition, the two strains also displayed differential expression of total cellular protein patterns most notably at 40, 42 and 58K molecular weights. Antigenic fingerprinting data indicate a weak relationship between Methanobacterium strains Ivanov and M.O.H.. Thus, the species name of Methanobacterium ivanovii , sp. nov. is assigned.
