Abstract

South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established in 1985 in order to strengthen and accelerate subregional co-operation, particularly in economic development. SAARC member states account for more than one-fifth of the global population. The first summit meeting of SAARC heads of state and government, held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in December 1985, resulted in the signing of the Charter of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. A SAARC Disaster Management Centre, established in October 2006, is the specialized organ of SAARC in the area of disaster management and disaster risk reduction. The SAARC Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism, which entered into force in August 1988, commits signatory countries to the extradition or prosecution of alleged terrorists and to the implementation of preventative measures to combat terrorism. A SAARC Human Resources Development Centre was established in Islamabad, in 1999. The national budgets of member countries provide the resources to finance SAARC activities.
