Abstract
According to a report published by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) at a Consultation on Hunger meeting 294 million people in South Asia have malnutrition comprising one-third of the global total of malnourished people. Pregnant and nursing mothers unborn babies and children less than 5 years old are most vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition. In South Asia the famine hotspots are in regions including mountainous areas of Nepal the state of Bihar in India and most areas of Bangladesh. The report notes that availability of food is not the key problem rather the inability to buy or access the food. The report blames poor food distribution as a main contributory factor to child malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in the region. Gender discrimination is also an extreme problem.
