Abstract

It is important to consider the layout of underfloor equipment to make sure the train keeps low-noise under stationary condition. The arrangement of the underfloor equipment is important in view of not only the noise but also weight balance, maintainability and manufacturing cost. Therefore, the underfloor arrangement shall be decided at even the early stage for designing the vehicles. The early design includes the exterior noise prediction as one of the important specifications. In general, there are various-size equipment, ducts and pipes, kinds of sub-floor made of thin metal plates around the space of the underfloor. When the train is on ballasted track, both surfaces (ballast of the track / underfloor of the vehicle with ducts and piping) may have absorption effect but it is still unknown. This paper describes measurement results on the sound propagation from actual railway vehicle underfloor using dodecahedral speaker.
