Abstract

Sound‐power tests are being developed as noise standards, particularly in Europe. An example is the lawn mower. A detailed set of experiments was performed measuring the sound power of a garden tractor with a mower, provided by the John Deere Company. To measure the sound power, a semicircular array of sound‐intensity probes is rotated in discrete steps over a hypothetical hemisphere enclosing the noise source, as described in previous publication [R. Hickling, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 87, 1182 (1990)]. The purpose of the tests is to explore the effect of the number of measurement points on surface integration accuracy. Another objective is to use intensity‐distribution and constant‐bandwidth spectral data to identify the principal sources of noise, with and without the mower engaged.
