Abstract

Photojournalism is a branch of journalism that informs and raises awareness in society through visual representations of events and situations. Especially breaking news photographs provide a historical record by documenting sudden and significant events and inform the public about important occurrences. Breaking news photography, in particular, is a type of photography that quickly provides information and visuals to the public by documenting events that develop suddenly and unexpectedly. This type of photography captures crises and significant moments, generally involving wars, natural disasters, social and political events. In this context, breaking news photography can present the most crucial evidence related to the news by quickly and effectively presenting the facts. Various organizations and professional associations around the world hold award in the field of photojournalism. The Pulitzer Prizes, which hold a notable place in this regard, include works addressing significant social events that have occurred anywhere in the world in the context of news photographs. This provides important insights into how news photographs are presented to the public through the media. In this research, it is aimed to reveal the deeper meanings and social reflections of news photographs beyond their surface meanings by using the method of semiotic analysis. For this purpose, photographs awarded in the “Breaking News Photography” category at the Pulitzer Prizes were selected using a random sampling method. The 5 press photographs that won the Pulitzer Prize, examined on the basis of studium and punctum as proposed by one of the known representatives of semiotics, Roland Barthes, were analyzed within the framework of his concepts of studium and punctum. Each of the selected photographs captures a dramatic moment of a specific event and carries certain values that can be universal. Thus, the study demonstrates how particularly breaking news reporting within photojournalism stands out through visual narratives. The study also argues that breaking news photographs are not only visuals with news value that strengthen the news but also carry strong messages with social and cultural meanings.
