Abstract
Measurements have been made of the fluctuations in the depth of the wind-driven mixed layer of the ocean together with ensemble-averaged temperature gradient profiles at the base of this layer. For the periods studied (where the wind stress was of the order of 1 dyn cm 2) the magnitude of fluctuations in depth of the deep mixed layer did not exceed that predicted by a saturated field of internal waves.
