Abstract

The first negative wave of the direct cortical response, measured transcortically in the visual cortex of the cat, exhibits an exponential decay with a time constant of 7.08 ± 2.00 msec sd; this is comparable to the membrane time constant of cat pyramidal tract cells. The exponential phase of the direct cortical response is generated in the upper layers of the cortex, and its potential field distribution is a linear function of depth over this region.
