Abstract

Abstract The nature of perception is examined from a psycholinguistic orientation and is related to the integrative level of Osgood's behavioural model. An experiment is briefly described where 29 psychological and psycholinguistic tests were given to a sample of seven year old children. The data were factor analysed and five factors extracted and interpreted. Four of the factors were found to contribute significantly to the identification of children who were severely retarded in reading, the two most significant factors being of an integrative or perceptual nature. A questionnaire covering observable pre‐school symptoms loaded on the two factors and holds promise as a predictor of potential dyslexics.
