Abstract

Summary. Two problems occurring within Mapania sect. Mapania are outlined. A new combination, M. sylvatica subsp. gabonica is made and a new subspecies, M. assimilis subsp. guianensis is described. This note arises from studies carried out for a forthcoming revision of the genus Mapania Aublet (Simpson, in prep.). Mapania is widely distributed throughout the tropics, being particularly well represented in central and northern South America, west and central Africa and eastern and South-east Asia. Of the six sections which are recognised within the genus by Koyama (1967), sect. Mapania is one of the most interesting because of the geographical disjunctions shown by its species. It is characterised by plants which have long, leafy bracts, but with the leaves themselves reduced to sheath-like cataphylls at the base of the culm. An important feature of the section is that it is represented in both South America and West Africa, one of only two sections showing such a distribution. Four species have been recognised in sect. Mapania, namely M. sylvatica Aublet, M. gabonica Chermezon, M. assimilis T. Koyama and M. paradoxa Raynal. Although latter species shares many characters in common with the other species in the section, it is distinct in
