Abstract
AbstractGold, zinc and plllladillm ions interact with geilltins as well as with thioether lind 11m mania, hillide and thiocyanllte ions used in photographic silver halide emulsions. These potent/ al lIgands X compete with the binder for the metal ions giving rise to the formlltion of mixed complexes M(gel)n.Xm,. (M = Zn, Pd). 11 is shown that Pd2+H and Zn2+ ions are able to stop the physical npenl1lg process of silver halide emulsio/1S contllir/ ing 1,B-dihydroxy-3,6-dithiaoctane. The two ions displace gold ions from the gelatin complex specIes as demonstrated by radiochemical measllrements. The gold(1l1) thioether complexes undergo a redox-reaction finally forming colloidal gold. TIle utilization of such chemical reilltions makes it possible to influence the sensitometric parameters of emulsions, e.g. fog decrease. Zn2+ lind Pd2+ ions give asynergistic effect when added together.
