Abstract

The habits of the hickory bark beetle, Scolytus quadrispinosus Say, during gallery construction, mating, and oviposition are described in detail. The host affinities of this beetle to Carya spp. are interpreted in light of these behaviorisms and the result s of field and laboratory experimentation. The host-selection mechanisms of S. quadrispinosus during ovipositional attack involve an initial response to volatile degradation products of abnormal tree physiology (primary attractant) reinforced by an attractant associated with ovipositing females (secondary attractant).
