Abstract

An examination is made of tidally generated high frequency internal wave trains propagating from the shelf-break of the Celtic Sea and Armorican shelf. The waves propagate on-shelf after maximum off-shelf tidal streaming at speeds of about 70 cm s −1 giving a wavelength between successive tidal disturbances of 30 km. As the waves travel on-shelf they are advected by the barotropic tide and can take on a solitary wave form.
