Abstract

Aluminium-silicon eutectic alloys were directionally solidified to study the development of microstructure as a function of growth conditions. The dependencies upon growth conditions are described by the relationship of the form ΔT = AV0.55G−0.43 and λ2.38V = BG−0.6 (where A and B are constants). This is in agreement with the argument made by Toloui and Hellawell. The results are also compared with the recent model of Magnin and Kurz which showed that this model is unable to explain the growth behaviour of the unmodified AlSi flake structure.
