Abstract

We realized a descriptive survey of psychiatrists practicing in the Gironde department regarding the practice of penally ordered care, except sex offenders. The results obtained on a sample of 51 patients show that penally ordered care are mainly represented by compulsory treatment, ordered for violent patients with drug abuse, for which psychiatric care is not always indicated. Our study also highlights the lack of trained psychiatrists in the legal field, and the necessity to reinforce the use of criminal expertise and the communication between treatment providers and judicial authorities.
