Abstract

Properties of soils on the 1888 Bandai mudflow deposits were examined to determine initial phases of soil development. Vegetation of the mudflow area was in an early to mid-successional stage; pioneer species such as Pinus densiflora and Alnus firma were still dominant. Soils of the mudflow area were considered immature. Morphologically, soil horizons, except the Ao horizon, were weakly differentiated. Mudflow soils proved distinct from the adjacent older soils with regard to cation exchange capacity, exchange acidity, pH, cation saturation ratio, form of soil humus and clay mineral composition.
