Abstract
An analysis is given for the acoustic modes in trigonal crystals which go soft as the elastic constants change so as to make them mechanically unstable. The results are presented as part of a tabulation of the properties of soft modes for all crystal classes. A number of errors in the recent literature are pointed out.
