Abstract
Lane's solution ?socialism?was very much a man's choice, inspired out of an 'anxiety about gender' as much as a consciousness of class. It would not only guarantee workers 'the full product of their labour', it would also 'retrieve their status as men'. Masculinity, she concluded, was not just a preoccupation of Lane's, but also of a male dominated labour movement.2 Lake's early argument was grounded in a detailed analysis of Lane's only novel, The Workingmans Paradise. A recent piece in Australian Feminist Studies is more theorised and more adventurous.
